Commons photographers: next virtual meeting on August 5

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

• On July 18, the Wikimedia Foundation launched a survey about the technical decision making process for people who do technical work that relies on software that is maintained by the Foundation or affiliates. If this applies to you, please take part in the survey. The survey will be open for three weeks, until August 7. You can find more information in the announcement e-mail on wikitech-l.

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 25 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 26 July. It will be on all wikis from 27 July (calendar).

Begrifffassung Automobile

Guten Morgen Dietmar, würdest du dir bitte folgende drei Dateien ansehen: 1, 2 und 3. Diese sind unter dieser Kategorie einsortiert. Das halte ich zugegebenermaßen für fragwürdig. Zwar sind die gezeigten Fahrzeuge Straßenfahrzeuge, also unter der Kategorie Road vehicles zu finden, nicht jedoch Automobile. Oder siehst du das an der Stelle anders? Laut dem dazugehörigen Wikipedia Artikel ist es das nicht. LKW sind demnach auch Automobile. Dann müssten wir, wenn ich das so richtig deute, aber weite Teile des gesamten Kategorienbaumes anpassen. Gruß Lukas Beck (talk) 16:35, 30 July 2023 (UTC)

@L. Beck: Die Definition bei Wikidata spricht von Personentransport, dann passt es. Im eigentlichen Sinne (geschichtlich) sind es Fahrzeuge mit eigenem Antrieb. Dann passt es nicht. Es gibt auch andere Stellen, an denen so ungenau definiert wird (Brücken sind Bauwerke, aber keine Gebäude. "Buildings" steht für beides. Oft genug wird voreilig und ungenau definiert, manche Editoren beharren auf ihrer Sicht. Damit habe ich mich mittlerweile abgefunden. Wenn es allzu doll wird, sage ich etwas. Ein aktuelles Beispiel ist die Kategorie Category:Views from automobiles. Warum um alles in der Welt sollte man unbedingt ein Teil von einem Auto sehen müssen? --XRay 💬 17:01, 30 July 2023 (UTC)

Demnach gäbe es aber keine Unterscheidung zwischen Category:Automobiles und Category:Motorized land vehicles. Das steht ja auch so im Wikipediaartikel Automobil und Kraftfahrzeug sind eigentlich synonym, wenn man die Gesetzesdefinition von Kraftfahrzeug, die Schienenfahrzeuge ausschließt, verwendet. Genau wie bei Bauwerke und Gebäude, baurechtlich in Deutschland ist das relativ klar, international, mit verschiedenen Sprachen, auf Commons wird das dann schwieriger. Ich würde jetzt auch nicht behaupten, man müsse für Category:Views from automobiles unbedingt einen Teil des Autos im Bild haben... außer natürlich, wenn nur dadurch glaubhaft gemacht werden kann, dass es sich tatsächlich um ein Foto aus einem Auto heraus handelt.

Was Motorized land vehicles angeht, ich denke nicht, dass es potentiell redundant zu Automobiles ist, sind dort doch auch solche Fahrzeuge drin, die wohl klar nicht zu irgendeiner bekannten Definition von Automobilen passen -- darunter landwirtschaftliche Fahrzeuge, oder gar Rolltreppen. --A.Savin 01:57, 31 July 2023 (UTC)

Es gibt sicherlich, auch sprachabhängig, gewisse Überschneidungen. Einen Traktor zum Beispiel könnte man sowohl in Motorized land vehicles als auch Automobiles einordnen. Wie aber auch die Wikipedia-Artikel widerspiegeln ändern sich die Ansichten. So wird Automobil mittlerweile oft als Fahrzeug zur Personenförderung angesehen.
Zu dem anderen Thema. Meiner Meinung nach kann man Category:Views from automobiles genauso setzen wie Category:Views from hills. In beiden Fällen muss weder ein Auto noch ein Hügel sichtbar sein. Es ist eine Information, die sonst verloren gehen würde. Wenn ich mitten auf der Autobahn stehe und ein Schild von einem Autobahnschild mache, mache ich auch ein Foto aus einem Auto. Da muss kein Teil von einem Auto sichtbar sein. Ich empfinde die künstlich herbeigeführte Einschränkung mit den sichtbaren Teilen unzureichend. Hin und wieder treffe ich auch Kategorien, bei denen ein kleiner Personenkreis (genauer: oft eine einzelne Person) versucht eine zusätzliche Regel einzuführen, die aber weder sinnvoll noch diskutiert wurde. Teilweise geht damit ein Verfahren einher, dass diese Person den Einstieg auch über die jeweilige Kategorie findet. Andere arbeiten mit Hotcat, Cat-a-lot oder anderen Tools und lesen derartige Regeln logischerweise nie. (Die Regel, die die einzelne Person bei Category:Views from automobiles durchzudrücken versucht, habe ich auch erst nicht gelesen, da ich die Kategorie von Category:Views from bridges und Category:Views from hills abgeleitet hatte.) Ganz abgesehen davon, dass so eine Regel oft nur solange Wirkung zeigt, wie die Person selbst immer wieder die Kategorien durchsucht - allein, weil bei vielen das Verständnis für so ein Regelwerk fehlt. --XRay 💬 04:27, 31 July 2023 (UTC)

• The Synchronizer tool is now available to keep Lua modules synced across Wikimedia wikis, along with updated documentation to develop global Lua modules and templates.
• The tag filter on Special:NewPages and revision history pages can now be inverted. For example, you can hide edits that were made using an automated tool. [1][2]
• The Wikipedia ChatGPT plugin experiment can now be used by ChatGPT users who can use plugins. You can participate in a video call if you want to talk about this experiment or similar work. [3]

Problems

• It was not possible to generate a PDF for pages with non-Latin characters in the title, for the last two weeks. This has now been fixed. [4]

Changes later this week

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 1 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 2 August. It will be on all wikis from 3 August (calendar).
• Starting on Tuesday, a new set of Wikipedias will get "Add a link" (Georgian Wikipedia, Kara-Kalpak Wikipedia, Kabyle Wikipedia, Kabardian Wikipedia, Kabiyè Wikipedia, Kikuyu Wikipedia, Kazakh Wikipedia, Khmer Wikipedia, Kannada Wikipedia, Kashmiri Wikipedia, Colognian Wikipedia, Kurdish Wikipedia, Cornish Wikipedia). This is part of the progressive deployment of this tool to more Wikipedias. The communities can configure how this feature works locally. [5]

Du hast, wie so oft, recht. Danke für deinen Hinweis! Ich hatte eine Kategorie ergänzt, aber nicht darauf geachtet, die andere zu entfernen. Das ist leider die Folge manueller Arbeit. Meinem Bot wäre es möglicherweise in den nächsten Wochen aufgefallen, denn derartige Fälle kann er unter Umständen erkennen. Aber ich sollte mir mal ein Skript schreiben, welches mögliche Überkategorisierungen besser erkennt. --XRay 💬 10:11, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
